El Viar

<< ... so I have changed Stromness for El Viar and Kirkwall for Villaverde del Río. My bike rides to Skara Brae and Birsay, I have changed them for the Pedro Espiga farmhouse, and the St Magnus cathedral for the Purísima Concepción church.

If I had planned to travel the B9056 road, enjoying the undulating landscape around Loch of Skaill, these two weeks I have travelled several times, on foot, the service roads to the farmlands of the Vega de Sevilla that start from the district of El Viar.

We are talking about a small village that was created back in the fifties of last century, when the National Institute of Colonization took charge of giving life to lands that barely produced, and at the same time settling many humble families that had the possibility of improving their lives. The new settlers came from very different places and, in addition to Alcalá del Río, which is where this town belongs, families from Villaverde del Río, Mairena del Alcor, El Viso del Alcor, Pruna and even from the province of Granada settled here.

It is said that, as everything had to be done, a climate of understanding and mutual help was quickly created among these people that continues today ... >>
